Heini’s Gourmet Market opens in Sugarcreek and features all-Ohio gourmet specialty foods and “cheeseballing”

Second location for famed Ohio artisan cheese maker features all-Ohio gourmet specialty foods, cooking classes, demos and tastings and “cheeseballing”TM.

SUGARCREEK, Ohio. More than 130 people attended the grand opening January 18, 2008 for Heini’s Gourmet Market in Sugarcreek. The new market, the vision of co-owner LeeAnne Dauwalder-Martin, is a second location for Heini’s Cheese, Millersburg’s renowned family-owned artisan cheese maker. Among those attending were representatives from all the area Convention and Visitors Bureaus, as well gourmet food purveyors, the head of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Ohio Proud program, hotels, other area tourism destinations and Ohio’s State Tourism Director, Amir Eylon. “It is so wonderful to see that the investment has been made to open a new culinary gateway in the heart of an important tourism region that showcases not only the local cuisine, but tells the story of culinary adventures from all over our great state,” said Eylon. The 4,000-square-foot market, located at St. Rtes. 39 and 93 in Sugarcreek, features more than 800 artisan specialty foods from more than 200 Ohio-based companies. A Food-Network quality kitchen serves as the market’s epicenter for daily demos and tastings and a free, weekly “Thursday Evening Cooking School.” “With the opening of Heini’s Gourmet Market, foodies across the country have a new place to call home,” said co-owner Lisa Troyer. “We’ve gone out of our way to partner with Ohio’s growing cottage industries and showcase truly unique gourmet Ohio food products and wine.” The market is located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country, the second most visited spot in Ohio. Visitors can sample a huge variety of gourmet Ohio food products, learn from daily demos and tastings, taste Ohio wines at the wine bar, and indulge in gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches from the market’s L&L Bistro. Perhaps the store’s most unique feature might be “cheeseballing,” a chance to make your own fresh cheeseball a la a Coldstone Creamery type of concept. Visitors choose their favorite fresh herbs and ingredients to make customized cheeseballs. Future plans call for expanded cooking classes and demos throughout the week from the top chefs from restaurants, inns and B&Bs from across Ohio.

• A regular, free “Thursday Evening Cooking School” from 6-8 p.m.

• Free gourmet coffee samples from Berardi’s Coffee Roasters in Cleveland

• Buckeye Wine Gallery and wine bar featuring some of the finest Amish Country and Ohio wines

• Gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and pizzas from the L&L Bistro featuring such unique sandwiches as the Jam & Swiss, using Heini’s most popular Lacey Baby Swiss cheese and Cooper’s Mill strawberry jam; condiment choices for other sandwiches include unique Ohio sauces and mustards.

• And more than 800 gourmet Ohio specialty foods from more than 200 Ohio companies, many small to medium size businesses. Visitors will discover unique Ohio products such as Hungarian noodles, flavorful gourmet sauces, jams, chocolates, chutneys, mustards and mixes, and of course Heini’s artisan cheeses.

Heini’s Gourmet Market is located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country at St. Rtes. 39 and 93 in Sugarcreek, Ohio and is open daily Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
